Lombardsbrücke, Hamburg

Hamburg's historic landmark rethought.

The Lombardsbrücke in Hamburg is much more than just an important transport link between the Inner and Outer Alster. It is a historical landmark that is deeply rooted in the history and development of the city.

Project objective and concept idea

At the heart of the lighting concept for the Lombard Bridge was the idea of staging this majestic structure as a harmonious entity without compromising its historical integrity. The aim was to make the bridge perceptible not only as a transport infrastructure, but also as a work of art. The focus was on the targeted accentuation of the architecture, which makes the bridge a striking yet subtle element in the cityscape both up close and from a distance. The balanced emphasis on vertical and horizontal lines makes the deeper structure of the bridge visible, while at the same time creating an atmosphere that connects historic and modern Hamburg. The successful blend of tradition and technology makes the lighting concept not only functional, but also an aesthetic experience for Hamburg residents and visitors to the city.

Accentuating the architecture

The lighting concept focuses on accentuating the unique architecture of the Lombard Bridge. The vertical pillars of the bridge in particular are brought to the fore by targeted lighting, which emphasizes their majestic presence in the urban space. The soft lighting along the balustrade enhances the horizontal lines, creating a harmonious interplay between the various structural elements of the bridge. This careful alternation of light intensity gives the bridge a soft yet impressive glow without causing glare. By using honeycomb louvres and precisely positioned luminaires, a subtle, even light distribution is achieved, allowing the bridge to appear in its full splendor at night.

Functional challenges and solutions

The implementation of the lighting concept presented the planners from the Hamburg lighting design office team licht with a number of challenges. As a listed building, it was essential that no interventions were made in the historical substance of the bridge. To ensure this, specially developed supply profiles were integrated along the bridge, which not only accommodate the luminaires but also the technical equipment inconspicuously. This solution minimizes the impact on the historic structure and at the same time ensures uniform illumination of the entire bridge.

To meet the high demands of the project, the linea xs luminaires were modified to perfectly match the architectural features of the Lombard Bridge. The luminaires were modified specifically for the bridge so that they blended in perfectly with the design and structure of the historic elements without detracting from the original charm. Special consideration was given to the exact integration into the different architectural parts of the building. Thanks to the flexible adjustment options, each luminaire could be positioned and adapted to best accentuate the respective details of the bridge - from the pillars to the filigree balustrades.

Technical details and controls

The lighting concept is controlled via a user-friendly application that enables precise adjustment of the light intensity, color and lighting times. This allows the lighting to be optimally adjusted depending on the time of day and weather conditions, which not only enhances the visual effect of the bridge, but also adapts its atmosphere to the different natural lighting conditions. In particular, the ability to individually control the light color and intensity makes it possible to adapt the lighting concept to festive or seasonal occasions. An automated schedule ensures that the lighting is shown to its best advantage at any time of day or night and always conveys the right ambience.

As a Hamburg lighting design office, we are particularly proud to see our lighting concept for the historic Lombard Bridge in action. With sensitivity, historical accuracy and state-of-the-art technology, we have emphasized the architectural unity of the bridge and at the same time specifically highlighted individual elements. Building in an existing listed building required close cooperation, detailed work, individual creative solutions, high technical quality and craftsmanship from everyone involved - as well as high-quality products from the manufacturers and visionary authorities. In the field of tension of this collaboration, we were able to present the Lombardsbrücke in a modern light that combines tradition, history and innovation.

Creative solutions and teamwork

The close cooperation between all parties involved made it possible to find creative and customized solutions that perfectly matched the architectural requirements of the bridge. This teamwork made it possible to achieve a result that is not only technically sophisticated but also aesthetically pleasing. Precise coordination with the municipal authorities and the protection of the historic structure were essential prerequisites for the success of the project.
